RISEN CHRIST IN EASTERTIME by Raymond Brown ($7.95)*

In his Liturgical Press books for Advent, Christmas, and Lent, Raymond E. Brown has made the rich insights of modern biblical exegesis conveniently available for reflection during the great feasts of the liturgical year. Here he does the same for the Easter season by commenting on the Gospel stories of the risen Christ. Many, including Brown himself, have written about historical issues in the difficult and very different resurrection narratives given us by the evangelists; but such technical problems are not of concern here. The stress is on how the treatment of the resurrection in an individual Gospel fits the theology and plan of that Gospel. Such a stress enables those who have followed the daily readings from the Gospel of John in the liturgy of Lent to appreciate how John's resurrection story continues the themes of those passages and thus gives a magnificently consistent picture of the victorious Christ touching the lives of those who believe in him. Similarly the treatment given here to the resurrection stories of Mark, of Matthew, and of Luke will have particular resonance in the liturgical year devoted to readings from the respective Synoptic Gospel. This book will enhance the appreciation of the resurrection on the part of those who give the Church's liturgical calendar a major role in their spiritual life.

Raymond E. Brown, S.S. (1928-1998) and ordained in 1953, was Auburn Distinguished Professor (Emeritus) of Biblical Studies, Union Theological Seminary (NYC). Author of some twenty-five books on the Bible and past president of three of the most important biblical societies in the world, he served by the Pope's appointment as member of the Roman Pontifical Biblical Commission. Time magazine has called him "probably the premier Catholic Scripture scholar in the U.S."
