British scholar and preacher Adam Clarke (1762–1832) began his work on the commentary with the New Testament on May 1, 1798. This section was first published in 1810. Clarke continued with his work on the Old Testament despite failing eyesight and finished it on March 28, 1825. He spent the rest of his life in revising his original work.
